I think you have to accept that the army lists aren't accurate, I can only assume it is intentional to make them all rounded and competitive with each other.

Luckily all my painting of bits and bobs for my armies for Britcon, Kegworth, Warfare and Brixham competitions is done.

If there are only 4 bases in the command say and all are in the ambush would it then be up to your opponent to decide if there is a flank march or if they are in ambush?

I would assume the attacking unit is the active unit.

I think the DBM/A/HoTT way is that the attacker in the open is penalized - which, if that is the case, seems unduly harsh (IMHO)
