Light Horse trapped and destroyed by an Impetuous Heavy Chariot, who must pursue 1 UD. However, the trapping unit, in this case MC, is only just over 30 mm away and in front of the Heavy Chariot.
Does the Heavy Chariot stop at 30 mm and not fulfil the compulsory 1 UD pursuit, or does it move the full 1 UD and the MC are displaced the minimum distance or does it burst through the MC?
There were 3 of us looking and failed to find a definite answer, so rules reference would be greatly appreciated. We eventually decided on the Heavy Chariot stopping at 30mm, but would appreciate confirmation we did it correctly. |

P 62 para 5 covers pursuing into contact. No-one can evade from a pursuit contact.
Ref the compulsory full 1UD pursuit for impetuous units, I presume they forgot to put in "unless a new enemy is contacted" under the exceptions in para 2. I've always assumed it though.
The MC can presumably disengage in their turn before combat takes place, having slightly curtailed the pursuit move.

Hi Adrian,
I probably wasn't clear, the MC and the Chariot are on the same side, the MC advanced and wheeled to just behind the LC, who were then charged by the Chariot. The MC prevent the evade of the LC. The LC were destroyed in the melee, leaving the impetuous chariot with a compulsory 1 UD pursuit, but it can't because the MC, a friendly unit, blocks it's full pursuit move. The bit on Pg 62 covers hitting new enemy, but doesn't seem to mention what happens if it is friends contacted, and by the same token the exceptions don't mention anything to do with contacting friends either. We considered both of these sections, and had a look at the Uncontrolled Charge/Burst through section on page 42 as a possible way to look at the compulsory nature of the pursuit, but in lieu of anything definitive we took what seemed the least awkward option and stopped the chariot short.
- Heavy Impetuous Chariot Friendly facing down
- Light Horse Enemy facing up
Medium Cavalry Friendly facing down and very slightly inclined so they are just behind the enemy LH and approx.31 mm from the front edge of the Chariot, but sufficiently behind to block the evade of the LH. |

I don’t have the rules to hand but I think the following apply;- The chariots may not interpenetrate the friendly MC.
- Even if the blocking unit was LC and aligned, the LC would not be interpenetrated because the front edge of the chariots would not move clear of the LC.Â
- Though impetuous units must pursue the maximum possible, this does not imply an uncontrolled charge. So the chariots do not ‘burst through’ their friends (and as previously stated, this movement would not get through the MC anyway)
Consequently the chariots pursue forward as far as possible, stopping when they contact their friends. |
