Is the quarter or half turn of a LI or LC unit free of distance cost only at the beginning and the end of the move? If the unit moves straight, then turns then moves, is that a cost of 1UD? _________________ Phil

Per page 33, under LIGHT TROOPS, 1st bullet: "They can make a half-turn or a quarter-turn for free at the beginning or end of an advance move. This half-turn or quarter-turn is not counted in the movement distance." So, a half-turn or quarter-turn at any other time in the lights' movement costs 1 UD I believe. Or at least this is how I read it. |

The vote is 1-1 so far. I agree that the exact wording implies it costs 1 UD in the middle of the move. But I believe the intention is that it should be free. _________________ Phil

I believe it can be at any time in the turn. An "advance move" need not occupy the entire turn. So, for example, a unit may make a 1 UD advance move, turn, and then do a 2 UD advance move.
Page 28 "During an Advance the unit moves straight forward. One or more advances can be combined with ...."
So a given move may have more than one advance in it. |

Citation: | Per page 33, under LIGHT TROOPS, 1st bullet: "They can make a half-turn or a quarter-turn for free at the beginning or end of an advance move. This half-turn or quarter-turn is not counted in the movement distance." |
How about the 2nd bullet : "They can make an additional half-turn or a quarter-turn during their move but their movement distance is reduced by one UD." |

That means the first turn, which can occur at the beginning or end of any of the advance moves which happen in a turn, is free.
Any additional turn subsequent to this turn costs 1 UD. |

Please note, when exiting a ZOC. the initial turn costs 1 UD per the DT.
This is based on p 34, right column, middle bullet. when it says the last turn is the freee one. |

So the concept here is that lights can make any number of "Advance" moves. The first turn of one of them is free, and the second costs 1UD. _________________ Phil

Exactly. A given turn may have multiple advances and the first turn, either at the beginning or end of any of them is free. Subsequent ones are not.
Dan is talking about a specific sub case related issue. When a light troop moves out of a ZOC the rules specify that it is the first turn which costs and the second one is free.
Specific cases override general rules. |
