If a mounted unit dismounts what, if any, movement of the dismounted unit and/or surrounding units is allowed when the dismounted base size is smaller than the mounted size. For example can the dismounted unit move backward or forward to reattach to the group it was part of when originally deployed as a mounted unit. Can a non-dismounted unit behind or in front of the dismounting unit be moved forward or backward to reform a group.

The most likely scenario is a Light Horse deploying in front of something knowing that it can dismount as Light Infantry because of already deployed Elephants (or fortifications). After the dismount you want the Light Infantry to be part of the group it was attached to as a Light Horse.

AFAIK if the mounted unit touch another, the dismounted shall touch it too. Furthermore, you should have the front of the unit at the same place (otherwise, imagine a column of 4 Cavalry just at the limit of the deployement zone, that dismount as MI using the rear of the last cavalry: instant advance of 1,5 UD! that would be a clear abuse of the spirit of the rules)

Agreed fdunadan. The unit should still make the same front and flank contacts. Because of the different base depths, a unit in contact with the rear of the dismounted unit may be pushed backwards or advanced forwards, but should still be in contact.

I think this is one where common sense and decency can prevail.

First Dismount occurs at deployment so very unlikely to have tricky effects.
Second units still have to remain in their legal deployment zone.
Third orientation at deployment must remain the same.
Units behind other dismounting may slide forward sufficiently to maintain group.* Staying in zone.
Light horse units can deploy at the rear of their initial base area.
