If you have an included general and he charges into combat with an enemy unit during his movement phase, does he have to pay +1 CP for other orders he issues to his command later in the movement phase?

If you have an included general (or attached general fighting) and he breaks off from the enemy during his movement phase, does he no longer have to pay +1 CP to issues orders later in his movement phase?

The penalty only applies if the general is "engaged" in combat, which needs to be declared. Otherwise they are simply attached to a unit in melee.

The definition to use is, "was he fighting in combat at the start of the player's movement phase"

So no to one and yes to two.

Agreed
  • 1CP if he is not in melee at the start of the turn.
  • 2CP if he is in melee at the start of the turn

My reading of this is that it is an old V3 issue that has been written out in V4.
Once you commit a commander to engage in combat, they cannot voluntarily withdraw. (Page 27 attached commander, 2nd bullet)
So if at the beginning of your turn your engaged commander is still in melee, the penalty applies and there is no way to get out of it.

This is not entirely true, once the general is engaged in a melee he may not leave it by himself.

However, a unit (with the attached / included general) may disengage from a melee under certain circumstances (See P40). Under these circumstances, even if the unit (and commander) disengages from the melee, it still costs an extra CP to give orders to other units / groups under his command as though he was still fighting.

Regrettably I assumed the version 3 FAQ and discussion was obsolescent.
Questions raised (or implied) about this topic include:

May unit with an engaged commander disengage from melee?

If a unit with an engaged commander routs the enemy on the front edge and immediately conforms to an enemy providing melee support, is the commander still engaged?
If a unit with an engaged commander routs the enemy on the front edge and the next turn an enemy previously providing simple support conforms into melee, is the commander still engaged?
If the enemy disengages from a unit with an attached commander, but then charges with a different unit, is the commander still engaged.

If both sides have attached commanders with units in front edge contact, who declares engagement first?

I realize these questions have been addressed one place or another. I just want to collect them and am a little chary of trying to characterize the answers.

No. See p27, 2nd sentence, bullet 2

Overly pedantic interpretations of the above notwithstanding, one hopes common sense would suggest not

Two adults should be able to work this out between them without recourse to a written rule.
