Page 50, 3rd bullet, says

“A unit in melee or melee support lines it front edge against the enemy, with a front corner against a front corner of the enemy, or
IF THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE, (in a flank or rear attack) with a front corner against the enemy rear corner.â€

(Under P 63, 1st bullet, this aligning with the rear corner is fully conformed and reduces the enemy factor to zero….)

However, suppose the is an enemy ZOC, friendly or enemy unit, etc., which prohibits the unit from lining up front corner to front corner on the enemy’s flank. Does this count ZOC or unit making the front corner to front corner contact IMPOSSIBLE and hence allow the unit to corner to the enemy rear corner to avoid the ZOC/ Unit yet still get the benefits of a flank attack?

No. See page 52 Conformation to a flank or rear.

This provision only applies when conformation on the front corner of a flank is physically blocked, not when the flank is protected by a ZoC.

This has been discussed previously on the forum and that was the definitive ruling.

Dave

Dave, would you have a link handy to the previous discussion? I went through all the rules here recently and don't recall it, so it's quite possible I missed it or it's somewhere else.

In the French forum - http://artdelaguerre.fr/adlg/v3/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8545

That's right, a unit in melee or melee support can also conform to the back corner of the opposing unit if it doesn't have the physical ability to conform to the front corner .

This possibility makes it possible to eliminate some absurdity resulting in particular from the differences in depth of the base.

Thus a unit whose base depth is less than 1 UD can be taken from the flank even if it is leaning against the edge of the table or impassable terrain.

Similarly in the following situation the 2 enemy HI units A and B are deployed at right angles

____ AA
BBBB AA
BBBB AA
XXXX YYYY
XXXX YYYY

If a friendly unit X enters a front melee against B, then another friendly unit Y may flank charge unit A conforming to its rear corner.

Note however that this possibility does not circumvent the primacy of the rule on ZOCs. In a flank attack you cannot conform to the rear corner to avoid an enemy ZOC (see page 52). So in the example above the maneuver is only possible if unit X plays before unit Y.

Patrick Lefebvre, a member of the DT, gives an unambiguous opinion that one cannot conform to the flank of an enemy aligned to the back corner in order to avoid a ZpC. A flank or rear attack is not allowed if the attacker ends up after conformance in the ZoC of an enemy. This is per page 52 and an additional rule. Note that enemy projecting the ZoC would be the MTE.
Unfortunately, the rules text (page 50) says only that one may align to the rear corner if alignment with the front corner is "not possible".

It also raises the question whether one may align to the back corner to avoid penalizing terrain? One can remain incompletely conformed to avoid terrain, but terrain does not physically prevent alignment to the front corner. (Actually, this is a minor question, as the terrain disadvantage will not kick in immediately.)
