As summarised by Philip Matyszak, the life of Mithridates “reads like an over-blown film script of the 1950s. It has palace coups, plots and assassinations. It features incest, fratricide, and an unhealthy fascination with poison. There are epic battles, sieges and massacres and kingdoms in turmoil, distressed princesses, corrupt officials and pirates. All that is lacking in the epic drama that was the life of Mithridates is a hero”.

I have always had a soft spot for Mithridates. Although he was clearly a major league a**hole, he was also Rome’s pluckiest adversary and rolled more than his fare share of ones. In this spirit, you are cordially invited to attend the first round of the ADLG Southern League 2023. Event details are summarised as follows:

Date: Saturday 14 January 2023

Time: 0900 to 1730

Location: Dean Court Community Centre, Oxford

Army Lists: Any list dated between 135 and 62BC (the lifespan of Mithridates)

Cost: £12

As always, the venue has free parking and I am more than happy to collect players from the Oxford train station. Freddy will also be on hand to serve refreshments and will be selling low-price soup and sandwiches at lunchtime.
