My club the Amsterdam6shooters received the 3rd edition a couple of years ago. I wrote a short review then, but now had time for a playtest series and comparison. Hope you like it. http://amsterdamwar.game.blog/2023/04/15/art-de-la-guerre-in-depth-review-after-4-standardized-playtest-games/

Excellent stuff !

Although I have a sneaking suspicion you may have been playing Furious Charge slightly incorrectly based on some of your comments ... ?

Impetuous is in the army list (p.134) and ‘Furious Charge’ is an ability on p.58.
The furious charge is an ability with many situational exceptions
The furious charge is a melee modifier, but does it count only when the barbarians charge, or also whent they are charged by others, during the first round of combat? The rules seem to imply the first option,
Impetuous units have a free (no command point cost) uncontrolled (forced) charge against units in range.

"Impetuous" is a top-level troop category which can be combined with a few weapons-related categories. If you have "impetuous" you get a basket of several characteristics / abilities (and some problems!)
- One of these abilities is essentially the same as the "Impact" combat bonus (ie +1 in the first round of a combat), but with the caveat that for Impetuous Troops this does come with a few more situationally specific exceptions than standard "Impact" ability normally has.
- The other ability you get is "Furious Charge", which means you inflict an extra hit on the enemy if you win in the first round (again this comes with some exceptions).

For barbarian foot against Romans:
- The Barbarians "Impact" bonus counts when they are charged by Roman legions or auxilia (both being swordsmen), but not when the Barbarians initiate the charge themselves (see the QR sheet and p17-20 under the definition of Impetuous)
- The Barbarians "Furious Charge" however still counts irrespective of who charges who in the same matchup

The combat effect in-game is that the Romans really want ideally to stand firm and recieve the crazy Barbarian charge at the halt... as this then cancels the Barbarian's +1 for Impetuous troops version of "Impact", but the Romans will still get their own non-Impetuous version of the "Impact" +1.
If the Romans decided they want to push on and charge the Barbarians, then both get the +1 for Impact.
Either way, if the Barbarians win in the first round, their Furious Charge ability always gives an additional hit - and allows them to negate any Roman armour as well - so they basically win big or die trying!

But... can the Romans, probably with a smaller army, have their best and most expensive troops just standing around waiting for the Barbarians to charge ...just to gain that extra +1 in the first round?
Or will the more numerous Barbarians start to get around their flanks and chew up the Roman support troops if the Romans don't press forward?
And the Romans know that as long as they survive the first round, then their armour starts to come into play and they should grind the barbarians down..

Can the Barbarians even manage to control their troops enough to stop them charging in at a disadvanatge?
To hold them back costs 3 PIPS.. and that's a lot for most Barbarian armies who may well have overall command values of only 2, or 3 at best?
So... are the Barbarians better off just charging in anyway, hoping for some lucky dice and relying on their Furious Charge to skittle out the Romans in that first mad rush, or pouring in more cheaper troops in a second wave if the first one isn't succesful??

Decisions Decisions!!

The one thing you do want to avoid is an uncontrolled charge by Impetuous troops - that gives a -1 combat penalty in the first round. Far better to get your general to pay a pip to send them in properly and not take that combat penalty if you can...

(FWIW I also think it's quite unlikely that ADLG picked up much in he way of ideas or mechanics from FoG - Herve himself was the first player on the database http://artdelaguerre.fr/adlg/v3/?/en/statistics/player/100 and that shows the first ADLG event held was way back in April 2009. Given that FoG competitions only started in the UK in January 2008, it surely would have been quite a feat for anyone to have bought, played, and digested FoG, decided which bits they liked and didn't like, and then developed, published and started running events for their own set of rules building on all of that, and done that all in the course of just 15 months... !)
