The Norman list is unique in that it is the only list that I am aware of (other than 48 Etruscan) where the replacement is done by fraction instead of a number range.

And the Etruscans are simpler - it is just "Max 1/2"



In the base list there are 6-16 knights, all of whom may be elite.

William in 1066 may replace 1/3-2/3 of them with Heavy Spear.

I don't see an example of replacement done by fraction rather than number of units on page 87 (or 8

My read would be that when it is done as a fraction, it is a percentage of the units actually taken.

So if I buy 15 Normans, then I must make at least 5 and at most 10 of them heavy spear.

If I buy 9 Normans then the numbers change to 3 and 6.

Is this correct?

That’s how I read it.
I also don’t think you round the numbers. So if you take 8 its between 3 and 5 as 8/3 =2.67 and 8*2/3 = 5.33.

And my read regarding rounding is the same. You must fall at or inside the 1/3 - 2/3 limit
