I'm wondering about creating mixed units by replacing other units in an army list. I gather there is no general rule about how to go about this, but am wondering if that is correct.
For example, the Burgundian Ordonnance list specifies how to take units that are being replaced to create mixed units. I don't see that in any other list, and I don't see anything specific about it in the army list rules in front.
For the Abbasids, the list says replace some spearmen and archers by Sudanese Abid. For the Han Chinese, the list says replace some halberdiers and/or crossbowmen by mixed units. I interpret those a little differently but wonder if the intent is the same.
Concretely, for an Abbasid list could you end up with 6 heavy spearmen and 6 units of Sudanese Abid? |

Why do you say that? Is it somewhere in the rules?
Logically I would think that if you start out with 6 stands of heavy spearmen and 6 stands of bowmen, you shouldn't end with less than 12 max after substitutions? I could see having to give up one stand of spearmen and one stand of bowmen to get two stands of abid.... |

You are correct you are limited to 6 replacements in the Abbassid list.
But it clearly states "replace some spearman and archers by Sudanese abid"
The example on page 78 refers to an "all" not a 0-6 range.
So unless there is a clarification, the options should be seen as:
replace any that you desire
or
replace an equal balance of each (the word "and" in the replace instructions).
But regardless you cannot have more that 6 abid when finished. |
