In the blurb it says...'The Highlanders were mainly bowmen but were also able to fight efficiently in battle and are classified as medium swordsmen with bow'

All jolly good then. Consider if they are charged frontally by cavalry with impact. In the first round of combat, the cavalry get +1 for fighting MI and +1 for impact. The Highlanders get +1 for being medium swordsmen. Do they also get the +1 for being bow in 1st phase vs mounted?

For the cavalry : it is correct, they get a +1 for fighting MI and a + 1 for impact. For the highlanders, they get a +1 (against all) but no more. Instead, they get a +1 support if they score less than the cavalry (ref: P18 support)
The combat is a net +1 for the cavalry with armor and furious charge advantages, against a +1 support only for the highlanders.

Does it count for mixed units too?

A half-spearmen half-bowmen unit has automatically Support?

Hi Ciofo,
Mixt units are composed of bowmens protected by lancers or swordmens.
Highlanders are all bowmens with swords (or swordmens with bows ).
So not mixt units but Mi with bow, like samouraïs or janissairs (not sure of the english names).

Both mixed units (e.g. 1/2 Heavy Spearmen 1/2 Bowmen) and your highland archer types (e.g. Medium Swordsmen Bow) count as having missile support.

They DO NOT get +1 versus mounted in the initial round of combat that "true" bowmen get.
