If you want to take an allied corps, and it has certain special attributes with respect to troop types selected, can this push the upper limit of the totals for troop types beyond the initial limits for a generic army?

For example: list 60-Classical Greek

Limits for Horsemen and Peltasts are 0-3 and 0-4 respectively.

However, I can have an allied corps (actually two in this particular list) from different parts of Greece in the same army, but pay the penalty of having unreliable commanders.

If, for example, I take a generic Greek army for corps I and II, I can have combined within them:
0-3 Horsemen,
0-4 Peltasts,
0-2 Thracians,
0-4 Skirmishers, and
must have at least 6 Hoplites to max 24.

If I wish to add a third "allied" Thessalian Corp with an unreliable commander then I can opt for (using the rules for allies and maintaining total to less than 40% of the total):
1-4 Horsemen - Medium (Max 2/Max 1 elite) and or Light Cavalry Javelin
2-4 Peltasts - Javelinmen and/or Light Infantry Javelin
3-12 Hoplites
0-1 Thracians
0-2 Skirmishers

That means that the army as a whole could theoretically exceed the limits on troop types by having 7 Horsemen, 8 Peltasts, 3 Thracians and 6 Skirmishers.

1. I think the 40% rule only applies to allies taken from a different list. Since these 'allies' are detailed in this list.

2. Alternative entries usually change the type and number of a given unit class for the entire army. However in this case I believe they also represent the values available to an allied corps. So if you wanted to take a Thessalian corps, that corps would have those revised constraints imposed; 2-8 horsemen and 4-8 javelin armed infantry in addition to any core formations.

3. I think any excess units could still be used in other corps. So while the unreliable Thessalian corps III might have 4x javelin armed LI and 2x javelin armed LH, another corps could have 4x medium cavalry, 2x javelin armed LH and some hoplites etc
