2 questions I got about the system.

1) is the game 100% compatible with DBA 3.0 Basing?
2) How good is the game at simulating hoplite warfare in the classical era?

1 - yes, although most foot "units" are 2 DBM elements
2 - I guess that depends. In the purest sense it will be 2 lines of nearly identical troops slamming into each other and rolling dice...which you may or may not find entertaining. Unlike DBM/A there are no push backs, so the two lines will then remain static on the table top until one wins, but instead you do have :
- steady attrition rather than DBMS binary dead/alive kills on a double-your-score result, as each foot unit can takes 4 hits to die.
- armour acts to reduce hits, and is separate to "quality"
- better quality hoplites will lose less often than average ones
- worse quality will win less often than average ones
- a Great General will be more able to rally (repair damage) on several units in each turn, making his troops more resilient in the slogging match

Like DBM, a breakthrough in the line (killing a unit) is going to be very decisive unless you have some form of reserve

Peltasts (LI) have a more significant role between the battle lines than DBA where they have none.

The Persian interaction works better and has a better feel, although I forget the DBA rating of immortals.

The rise of macedon and the phalanx hoplite works well.
Companions vs hoplites is more nuanced and you basically don't have the lucky roll to blow through in DBA.

Interesting I may pick this ruleset up when I do a bigger order from Northstar. It's been on my radar for ages but given that I only have limited opportunity for any historical wargaming... I never took the plunge.

I'm mostly interested in a quick system to resolve battles in campaigns. Both light campaigns and 'GMT wargames where I play the map battles' out.
And my period would be Classical Greece.
I'm slowly but surely prepping a Spartan, Athenian/Neutral, Theban, Persian and Macedonian force for the campaigns using 1/72 figs.
So I'm scouting for rules that would do what I want them to do... namely reflect the era without being too crunchy.

So one of the strengths of DBA was it worked very well for campaigns as it was quick and you knew pretty clearly how any modifications you made would effect the battle. (The 3 element reinforcement mattered, but variables of timing and location mitigated it.)

So ADLG I think has similar assets. The 100 points game is DBA-sized and also in time the levels of loss make it a bit more interesting. Giving one side say 120 points is important but not uniquely decisive. The 200 points game is similar but that of course is longer.

I've got on the drawing board to take the old diplomacy game, make every army a 100 ADLG army and when you are supported you get 20 extra points as a reinforcement. I think it would work well.

To counter I have enjoyed games like FOG and DBM. Particularly DBM breaks down fast in a campaign. FOG would only have worked for certain army types and Hoplite would not have been one.

Thanks for the feedback.
Some definite food for thought.
And I have yet to try DBM however I suspected as much that it would not be that campaign useful. Glad i didn't pick it up! Smile
