I noticed in Tim's AAR from the Worlds Alexander was using LMI Javelin I have never used them are they any good?
If you have the choice between LMI Javelinmen or Medium Foot Spearmen I have been taking the MF spear is this the correct choice? Or if you have the choice between LMI Javelinmen or LF Javelin what would you choose? |

They are very useful against elephants and scythed chariots.
And they can evade... _________________ "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead"

LMi javelinmen have some advantages and disadvantages:
compared to LI:
better in melee
not immediately exterminated in open ground
shoot without the -1 modifier
better cohesion
can make a flank attack (lose of 1 CoPt)
but
cannot form a group with mounted
less efficient in difficult terrain (move, fight or shooting)
cannot pass trough others unit (even when evading...)
compared to MI
can shoot
can evade
but
less efficient in melee
So there is no clear answer, it dépends entierely of your plan and your favorite tactics: a Lybian (12) army with 30 LMI javelinmen, even if some are mediocre, will be very tough to deal with if you can make them shoot, evade and menace flanks. _________________ Audentes fortuna iuvat. |

Probably difficult to deal with because it's over 200pts _________________ Putting the ink into incompetence |

I think they are certainly not frontline combat troops, but they can fulfil a number of specialist roles as part of a larger command.
Medium Spears or Medium Swords are more your basic building-block generic infantry types.
Javelinmen are the best anti-elephant foot in the game, so are almost worth taking a couple for that alone. They also allow you to bully enemy LF more effectively as part of a rough terrain contesting force. _________________ www.madaxeman.com |

Mediocre are 5 points, so with some of them it is below 200. |

They are also great to bully light horse on the flanks. Zoc without being zoned themselves, and sometimes get close enough to throw Javelins. Have even got them sneaked round behind to block evades |

LMI javelinmen will die in droves versus quality mounted. MI Spear may survive. |

Much depends on how they are used.
Given that you know they will die in droves, bulking out on mediocre troops is the way to go. Then spread out and use depth to make best use of the extra numbers. Sure you will lose many of the initial combats but will have enough left over to swamp the flanks and turn the tables, and attrition is a war you can win.
And then some people just love those small compact Elephant armies . . .
It is a very different army to use, but I am not so sure it is a ‘tournament’ army not least because it’s size and strategies tend towards cautious, hence slower play. |
