2 MU in front of my impetuous knights is a unit of enemy LI. Half an MU immediately behind the LI is an enemy elephant. So the elephant is 3 MU from my impetuous knights and it's my turn.
My impetuous knights are NOT forced to make an uncontrolled charge because they could end up contacting the elephant (I know for certain that the LI would be forced to evade). This is an exception to uncontrolled charge as per page 41, right hand column.
In considering whether or not my knights are forced to make an uncontrolled charge, I ignore the die roll variations to my standard 3 MU charge distance. Because the elephant is at 3 MU I can use the exception. If the elephant was at 4 MU I could NOT use the exception even though in theory I might throw +1 MU on the charge move die roll.
Am I right? |

If your intend is to charge an elephant at 3 MU, you do not have to rall for charge distance, even considering there is a LI screen evading in front of you. Simply because you knights have a target at range (p40 para 7)
Now considering the elehant is at 4 MU. It is not a validate target so, the LI screen evading, you have to roll for variable distance charge as all your target evade and, on a 5/6 your knights can hit the elephant.
Considering now the impetuous charge, as the knights may contact the elephant with a variable move, they are not subject to impetuous charge. (p41 right column and note p42) _________________ "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead"

The box at the top of p42 makes clear you take the variable move distance into account. So if El are within 4UD the impetuous mounted don't have to charge. |

Thanks Alan - the example given in the box on page 42 top left actually answers my main question.
To recap, impetuous knights NEVER have to make an uncontrolled charge if elephants that the charge might contact are within 4 UD. |
