|
A few weeks back a brave band of CLWC gamers hopped in a car and headed across Europe to take part in the ADLG German Team Tourament in Braubach, on the banks of the mighty Rhine.
On our journey we encountered many strange sights....
..including a trip to the museum in Mons in Belgium...
...some heavyweight tank action at Bastogne barracks...
..a bfrief history of medieval torture in Trier ...
...which was also the capital of the Western Roman Empire for a while...
..before finally engaging in 5 games of ADLG using a Medieval German army ...
..with what admittedly was mixed success...
..under the expert leadership of the Kaiser Gnome ...
..before heading home via a rain-soaked, beer-soaked 800 year old 4 month long drinking festival!
For a full set of military tourism, gastronomic and liquid intake excess, musical weirdness, the Gome Kaiser trading insults with Hannibal, and the occasional spot of reportage of 15mm scale Medieval wargaming head on over to the Battle & Tourism reports now ! _________________ www.madaxeman.com |

Good reading indeed! Thanks for writing these.
Extra interesting because I have Medieval Germans, but don't play much. So it's interesting to see how the troops do.
How would you change your list if you do the event over? |

Mainly as I've got a load of Flemish/german looking pikemen that I wanted to use - and having Mediocre makes it a much more exciting seat-of-your-pants army to lay with (in theory!!) _________________ www.madaxeman.com |

I'd not really start from this list TBH - a lot of the rationale was to use the Free Canton Medium Spearmen and see if I could find a way to make them viable in a Medieval period, where (in theory) very few opponents would have much in the way of Medium Foot to contest terrain. It worked well in the first 2 games, "could" have worked in games 4 and 5 and even against the Hungarians would probably have been OK with a bit more terrain to force heir LH into taking on the spearmen, even in the open.
There's so much variety in that list, yet so much of it is fairlly generic "Medieval" that I sort of feel the point of choosing it (as opposed to, say, Condotta) is simply to be able to use the "unique" toys that this list has, rathr than expecting it to be "good".
To me those unique toys are the Mediocre Pike, Free Canton Med Spear and the Teutonic Knights, so my list was designed to include them all, and then see if it could be half decent! _________________ www.madaxeman.com |

You won two, lost three and appear to have had rubbish dice rolls in one of the games you lost, I think that meets your aim of a half descent list. |

Thanks for the explanation.
That approach sounds like a good way to enjoy your games.
I have wondered about the medium spearmen.
From playing ancient armies and DBM, I don't like to go without terrain capability. They seem like a potential liability or weak point in ADLG though. I just don't get to play often enough to really try things out. |
