|
This came up at a recent competition game.
A Yi Korean army has 2 units of Heavy spear, both with integrated light artillery attached.
One of the Heavy spear units (B) has a unit of Light foot bows in front of it and in base to base contact with its front.
The other Heavy spear unit (A) is attempting to shoot at a unit of Heavy Knights, which are just over 1 UD away from the Light foot bow unit and directly in front of unit B.
Unit B cannot shoot its Integrated artillery at the Heavy Knights, as its own Light foot bow are within 1 UD of its own front edge.
Unit A cannot draw a line from both its front edges to hit the Heavy Knights, as the protruding friendly Light foot bow prohibits this.
We also assumed that Unit A could also not shoot its Integrated Light artillery 1 UD to the side, as again, the friendly Light foot bow unit was within 1 UD.
Where we therefore correct in agreeing that neither of the Integrated Light Artillery could shoot at the Heavy Knights?
Thanks

p57 has the rules for line of sight, which include how line of sight can be blocked by friendly or enemy units
p59 has the rules for shooting overhead, which include what are (effectively) the exceptions to the LOS rules for integrated artillery
The situation you describe is one where LOS to the target is clearly blocked by the LF unit, even when measured from the front of the infantry behind which the integrated artillery is standing. _________________ www.madaxeman.com |

If I understand your description correctly, and the units are fully aligned on each side, then A's near LoS runs down the edge of the LI. It is, as Tim would say, an edge case. Pity the rules never got around to deciding what was legal.

Thanks Tim, having read both pages you refer to, my opponent and I concluded the same answer.
But I was just wanting to make sure we'd got it right (& he'd not been unfairly disadvantaged), as the integrated artillery bit was a new one (for me anyway).
I am a longtime/ex Armati player Neep, so I have it genetically embedded in my head that exact alignment (ahead of contact) is an impossibility - so it wasn't a problem for me on that score.
Cheers

Well, the ability to slide makes for easy exact alignment, and the games is very much biased towards that.
A more moot question would be whether you could shoot over because the enemy is 1UD from the artillery, but not from the spearmen in front. |
