Posté le: Lun Oct 19, 2026 2:38 am Sujet du message: Question on Evade Moves |
|
It has probably been asked before, but I can't find any messages covering this question
LH are 3 UD from a village in the open
They are charged and choose to evade
Direction of evade takes them towards the village
What happens now -
1. is the village considered an obstacle - difficult terrain - (it isn't listed as one) If considered an obstacle, does the LH stop 1UD from village then turns/slide to avoid if it can't then continues evade move along edge of village?
2. As village isn't considered an obstacle and the LH has a move distance in difficult terrain, do they continue to the edge of the village, and as they have exceeded their difficult move distance stop at the edge of the village?
3. Something else entirely?
Thanks in advance. |

For evade purposes, obstacles are things that completely block movement - so impassable rivers, coasts, and impassable terrain pieces.
Otherwise you just ride into it.
If you've already exceeded your in-terrain movement by the time you get there, you stop at the edge.
Thats it. _________________ www.madaxeman.com |

This is a frequently asked question. The second bullet on page 48 explicitly disallows a unit to slide to avoid rough or difficult terrain when within 1UD (and presumably implicitly plain terrain for LI). Leaving one wondering if the other shoe should drop.

What Madaxeman says.
*Note there is a dissent that arises in some European continent adjudications, this anomaly is being discussed.
But 98% of umpires will rule as Madaxeman writes. |

That one always gets me. It is as if the other part of the rule got left out. |

No, the second bullet point on page 48 explicitly does not allow a unit to slide if it is within 1 UD of rough of difficult terrain. |

| In ADLG, p. 48, bullet point 2, a unit that begins its evade move within 1 UD cannot slide to avoid the enemy. However, logic would suggest that if it starts more than 1 UD away, it should be permitted to slide? |

Logic would suggest that, but the rules explicitly do not. Obstacles are defined, terrain is not an obstacle, and so the rules do not allow evaders to change direction to avoid terrain |

The situation remains as it has been for nearly 5 years.
On the one hand:
Obstacles that block evasion are things you can never move through and do not include rough or difficult terrain (that you can move through).
On the other hand:
Page 48 bullet 2 only forbids avoiding slowing terrain when it's closer than 1 UD.
Patrick Lefebvre's written interpretations allow this beyond 1 UD.
The V3 FAQ clearly allowed you to avoid slowing terrain after 1 UD. |

I hope the entire evade section is redone for v5. It is one of my only problems with the rules.
Evaders can slide and turn to avoid things (maybe even terrain depending on your interpretation). However, the pursuer gets no manoeuvre at all!
Hopefully it changes to something a bit fairer where the pursuer can actually pursue the evading unit.
Better yet, roll the random +/- distance dice for evaders and pursuers and decide if they will be caught without moving the units at all.
If they have friends they can interpenetrate within 2 UD behind them then they get to find shelter behind them and the pursuer can attack the shielding unit.
Would remove a lot of time trying to determine where the evaders will go and how they will get there. This is done at the moment without considering the pursuer at all. They could start mm away but just sit there until the evading units complete an often complicated movement before they move at all.
It should be simple; you evade 3 UD, I pursue 4 UD, we are less than 1 UD apart - you are caught.

I really don't understand why you guys are agonising over this.
Sure, the page 48 Second case blocked evade heading uses the word "obtstacle" in a different way compared to page 67. But page 48 then clearly explains what an "evade obstacle" is:
1. an enemy unit within one UD directly ahead that it can't avoid by sliding one UD or less,
2. a friendly unit within one UD directly ahead that it can't interpenetrate or avoid by sliding one UD or less,
3. an impassable terrain piece within one UD directly ahead that it can't avoid by sliding one UD or less.
In these three cases the evade is blocked and therefore cancelled (i.e. do not consider the evade rules any further).
For clarity, if the would-be evader starts within one UD of rough or difficult terrain these are NOT considered obstacles that block the evade. The evader is NOT permitted to slide to avoid this terrain; it MUST enter the terrain (adjusting its move distance accordingly). |

The issue is not terrain within 1UD, that is clear. It is delaying terrain further away. |

The page 48 rule is all about whether or not a would-be evader’s evade is cancelled - hence the criteria of “obstacles within 1UD.
Once we’ve established that an evade is NOT blocked we move on to the evade move rules. An evading unit encountering slowing terrain at any point along its evade path (regardless of how close that slowing terrain is) adjusts its move distance accordingly. |
