Under contact restrictions (p 52)
mixed units "can contact mounted that are in melee or charge them in flank or rear."
Melee (p 50)
A unit is considered in melee if
It is in contact with enemy front edge ("not just by the enemy's front corner")

So reading these two together a mixed unit cannot contact an enemy mounted that is in an overlap/supporting position except via a flank charge. Correct?

You're right.

Except for a flank or rear charge.

But they can go an overlap/supporting position against a mounted already in figth (with a friendly unit in contact with it's front edge on this mounted unit.)
