|
Some unfortunate knights were ZoCed by an elephant from behind (ignore light cavalry as they are not relevant in this situation). It was not clear to us what the knights could do. The rules for exiting a ZoC (p.34) say:
"other units that cannot evade must make a retreat move without turning away from the enemy. To do this, they retreat directly to their rear..."
Would the knight retreat to their rear - moving up in the photo? Is exiting the ZoC not an option until they spend a move turning around? something else?

I don't have my rule book with me now, but it would make sense for the knights to turn to face the 'most threatening enemy', then perform the retreat move. |

That would seem to make sense but the rules don't seem to allow for it...
"...to do this they retreat directly to their rear, without changing orientation" |

Page 34 says that the following movements are allowed whilst in an enemy's ZoC:
*stay in place;
*advance, make a wheel, or a turn in order to align with the most threatening enemy, move closer to it, or charge it;
*Perform an extension or contraction; or
*retreat to leave a ZoC
On the basis of your response above, I suppose that it would take two turns for your knight to exit the ZoC. On turn one, he would turn to face the elephant. Provided that the elephant does not charge, the knight could then retreat on turn two.
It would be interesting to see whether the French translation has a slightly different wording. |

in French, the Kn can do one of the following move on his next phase:
- stay there (and may be rallying)
-Wheel or 1/4 turn to face the elephant
-move to his rear to quit the ZoC of the elephant. in this case, he is disordered.
he can't do an extension or contraction because it would make him out of the ZoC. _________________ Audentes fortuna iuvat. |

So if his rear would move him closer to the elephant but out of the ZOC he could do it? |

Hello
The knight can only exit ZoC by moving on its rear. In this case it is not possible so the knight have to make a half-turn to face the elephant. Then, on the next movement phase he will be able to exit the ZoC.
It is very difficult for troop that cannot evade to exit ennemy ZoC. |

You answer more quickly to GB's players than french players.
It's not fair.

Is it different if LI (and presumably Light Cavalry) are ZOCed from behind?

In this case you have to apply the rules for units able to escape. _________________ Hasta la victoria Siempre!
