This may apply in other cases as well, but these are the two I have seen.
In list 39 (and 40? though there is no note there) it says "Some phalangites and Hypaspists can be deployed as lighter troops with spears instead of pikes."
Does this mean if I buy them as pikes I can choose at deployment to deploy them as spearmen, presumably medium spearmen?
List 237 (Lithuanian) says "Lithuanian horsemen are equipped with a bow that is used only dismounted. Thus light cavalry can dismount as light infantry with bow and medium cavalry as bowmen."
Does this mean they can choose to dismount at any time (like some knights can) or does this just indicate they dismount as bow armed troops instead of as light infantry javelin or medium swordsmen when they could otherwise dismount as indicated on page 19? |

You've to respect the list. You can have some phalangites and Hypaspists like Heavy Spearman. So they are lighter than pike. But you can't choose at deployment.

The second is right I think (except if text at the end of list write something different). _________________ Hasta la victoria Siempre!

You mean this must be decided at the time the list is created? |

You must choose witch troop you will play when you built your army list. |

Lithuanians specify replace horse men with Bowmen or LI with Bow. The note just explains why they convert in this manner. |
