One glaring omission in the army lists are the various Jewish revolts which occurred in Judea, Upper Mesopotamia, and Cyrenaica at various times between 66 and 135 CE (Common Era=AD). There were no large battles except the destruction of the Legio XII Fulminata at Beth Horon in 66 CE. For most of the time smaller engagements were fought as the Romans attempted to besiege the rebels and the rebels tested the besiegers with sudden assaults or large foraging parties. Sometimes these clashes involved thousands of troops. The Bar Kokhba revolt required more than 7 full or partial legions and 16 Auxiliary units to suppress.
Leadership in the first revolt was awful, except for Josephus in the Galilee, the Jewish central commanders were bickering, distrustful allies who fought each other every chance they had. In the later wars inspirational local leaders arose such as Andreas (or Lukuas) in Cyrenaica, Artemion in Cyprus, and Simon bar Kosiba in Judea (Bar Kokhba).
The Jewish armies were well armed with swords, javelins, and missile weapons (bows and slings), defensively they would have had shields, but initially little metal armor or helmets, adding to their arsenal from captured or manufactured stocks. One particular weakness was cavalry although Jews in Mesopotamia and east of the Jordan could have made some contribution.
Until the author creates a Jewish Revolt army list we gamers will have to make up our own list
Please feel free to post suggestions here as I will when I am totally done editing mine. |

Yes vey interesting.
But I'm not sure it will be a good thing if every player, lover of a period, will edit others lists.
We already have almost 300 of them. _________________ Hasta la victoria Siempre!

Yes, but this is a glaring omission. Many of the current lists have variations for different specific periods, this could be a 4th iteration of 103 the Judean Jews. |
