This has not come up in a game, just reading closely in preparation for an upcoming tournament....
There is this text in the FAQ:
Q : Aunit is partially in the terrain, and is contacted by an enemy. Does it have to conform if this would result in leaving entirely from the terrain ?
A : Yes, Conforming is mandatory, unless open terrain will penalize the unit (such as the Li for instance).
It, and the rules, leave me with some questions.
1. So, a medium infantry is in a position where it's front is half in the open and half in some rough going. A cav unit charges it and contacts it on the corner that is in the open. The cav does not have to conform, per the rules on p 52 (and there is an example a couple of pages later).
It's puzzling (not sure what the right word is) to me how the factors for this are calculated. Since the text is written so that the cav isn't pulled into the rough (and takes the penalties for it), I'm assuming the cav gets its factors for fighting in the open - including impact if it has it, and furious charge. I guess I don't think that is unclear, just odd. Thoughts?
2. Suppose the cav has supports on either side, so it contacts the front corner of the medium infantry with its front edge. Suppose the medium infantry has a support on its unengaged flank. So if they conformed, one cav support would be on one infantry support, but there would be a naked overlap. We calculate it as the cav getting one support, I think. Does that sound right?
2b. In the following turn, the medium foot would need to conform to the cav. But suppose the medium foot's support would have to move more than 1 UD to conform (not allowed). Does the medium foot that was contacted on the corner in the previous turn get pulled away from its support? |

1) the cav will fight in open terrain, with all its bonus. the MI will count as in open terrain (but will count the malus for difficult terrain if a part of the unit is in such terrain)
in fact, being partially in terrain is as being in open if your are charged at: you do not get any bonus of the terrain. the reason is that the fight will be between soldiers in the open and not entering in the terrain.
2) the case was like this:
A-Cv
----MI-B
each unit can count the supports (A for the Cv and B for the Mi)for the overlap.
2b) the B support shall only move less than 1 UD to maintain the contact with the MI and so:
A-Cv
---MI-B _________________ Audentes fortuna iuvat. |
