I am new to La Guerre my copy of the rules arrived this morning, though I have one question; What is the minimum number of bases/ units to ensure an army is competitive? |

great question!
Ancient are usely around 25/26 units
dark age and feudal 22/24
heavy medieval 20 /22
But some players win with 19 units armies, and others prefer 30 units armies.
The only good answer about armies choise and compo is always the same: test it by playing more and more! _________________ "Quand on a pas de technique, faut y aller à la zob"

Horse archer armies usually has 20-22 units. It's difficult to have more with them. |

Depends on the army you like playing with.
Do you like a small high quality force, or a big cheap horde to outflank them? Most armies are somewhere in between. There is no magic winning army so go for the one you like. |

It's a great pleasure at AdG, that any type of army can be played and win !
So test, try and play the more you can...
And enjoy ! |

Thanks for the replies, I would like to use Timurid and I came up with 18 units. Which to me seemed a bit small to be competitive. In FOG-AM days very few people won comps with armies smaller than 12 battle groups I was curious to see how army size worked out in ADG. |

Try to exchange one CV bow with 3 LI to obtain 20 units. _________________ "Quand on a pas de technique, faut y aller à la zob"

I upgrade the 8 Timurid Noble to elite so can pick some points by bring some of them back to ordinary. That does raise the question is the upgrade to elite worth it or is it better to have some extra units? |

As others say, there is no "correct" size for an army, rather there are more appropriate terrain choices, strategies and tactics depending on the composition of your army and that of your opponent.
The figures given above relate to army values of 200 points, where the unit costs average out somewhere around 7-11 points depending on the type and quality of units available / chosen in the given army. In general, earlier armies have weaker and hence cheaper units than the later armies, consequently earlier armies can be more numerous than later ones. |

it dépends of the use you will make and what your opponent will do.
heavy cavalry elite have a minimum of 3 (1 of dice, +1 for elite, +1 for armour) when receiving a shot. Your opponent must roll 4, 5 or 6 to disorder you in the worst case. That's only 6/36 chance for a Cavalry bow and 12/36 for a foot with bow ( and 3/36 for a LI or LH...)
You can then resist to fire and deliver your own, harassing without major risk.
in C-C, the elite and armour gives also a fair confidence, especially if you only engage troops already disrodered.
the problem is that it's a slow tactic; you can be outflanked by a numerous army, or try to eliminate HI during long turns. Cv and LH will evade and you will have to chase them, wich is pretty slow too.
I use a Mongol Army with only 17 units (Stategist, +6 command, max of HC, all Cav and LH Elite) Usually, if I can use the terrain and concentrate on one flank, I can pierce before being crushed. But I have also been beaten when blocked by HI and Bows while Kn or HC were turning me. Rallying is also specially important since I can't take losses.
Try, test and choose the army that will fit your own style. _________________ Audentes fortuna iuvat. |

I would down grade 2 to ordinary and by a LI for filler at a minimum.
Often you will have one shooter supporting another and as you can designate then it works. |

Hello.
First dont take heavy cavalery with your éléphants in the same corps. Too many pips for move. You could join your Levy in this corps.
Your cavalery need To move fast . |
