Hi. In the army list, where a troop type such as Roman legionaries has an option for support +1 point, do you have to buy a unit of Light Infantry to give that support and pay the 1 point, or do you basically get an extra base to add to the rear of the unit for that point?

The 1 point gets you the LI base to the rear which provides support.

the base is just a marker to indicate that the unit has support, so no, you don't have to buy a unit of LI for this. LI are units themselves, the support is just an ability of units that have it, usually indicated by a similar kind of base as LI have.

Do not forget that the support is not valid against any heavy armored opponent.

Thanks for the clarification. What type of marker is used, typically, to represent this type of support? Would some Roman archers on a light infantry base suffice, or would it just confuse?

Yes, a Li in the Hi's back is correct.
I think there's a Hi +support shown in the rulebook's first pages (picture of all types of units).
