I was asked
Citation: | Can a unit disengage from attacking a fortified camp? |
My reply:
Interesting question. I poked around and I see nothing that permits it.
Now a fortified camp is treated as a unit in melee p 59
Fortified camps are not listed in the permitted items to disengage from p 44.
Therefore i would say no.
I could see where someone would want to believe that a fortified camp should be listed in the 5th bullet of p44. But it is not.
So pending an errata I would say no.
Any comments? |

1) An unit attacking a fortified camp is engaged in melee against an ennemy unit who has no ZOC (fortified or not) - p59 2nd para 1st line
2) as far as the melee is engaged and the fortified camp is "fighting" the attacking units cannot be fired upon or evade
3) An unit can break-of against an ennemy behind a fortification (p 44 5th bullet)
My opinion is : attacking a fortified camp is a specific combat against a notional unit defending a fortification around the camp (see p59). It is different from the camp plundering. The p44 5th bullet can apply and an unit can break-off from the combat against a fortified camp. _________________ "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead"
