Hi
The situation given on page 37 of an illegal charge occurred during a recent game. We moved A into contact with B, and then conformed B, but what should we have done?

Nothing - as it was an illegal charge it couldn't have been made in the first place.
Maybe move A to a position where it could charge next turn?

Yes it can not charge B, as B is in melee, but can it touch it? I can find no rule that says it can not move as shown in the example (except it seems wrong) but why not slide a bit to end up touching Bs flank? And then what?

A "move" can end up touching the enemy in an overlap position, or a "charge" can end touching the enemy in a legal contact position.
No other moves that end in contact are allowed to be made

I don't think the rules actually proscribe either of the above. However, as a general principle, you should take the rules as describing what is permitted and assume that if you can't find a rule that permits what you want to do then you can't do it.
That said, think about the tactical consequences of what you want to do. Neither move will affect the present melee and in the likely event of your unit routing unit A will find itself flanked, overlapped and possibly disordered. ie not good
