Can non light troops be placed in ambush within 4 UD of a flank?
My take on this is that they cannot as in the "Deployment area" section on p71 there is an explicit exception for the defender to place non light troops closer than 5 UD of the halfway line. There is no exception for non-light troops being placed within 4 UD of the table edges.

The answer is yes they can.
Just as any of the defender's units may be placed in ambush (in or behind appropriate terrain) anywhere in a flank sector including within 3UD of the centre line.
