We had an interesting combat the other day. A light infantry unit charged an elephant in the rear and the light infantry was destroyed in the melee round. Does the elephant have to conform to the light infantry before the light infantry routs?

I don't believe so.
I don't have my rules with me to point you specifically. I think it is also in the FAQ.
But conforming (in this instance) comes after the Light infantry has routed and is removed therefore there is no cause to conform. |

No.
A unit only conforms after a melee with a 'live' opponent. If the LI had survived and it was the only unit in melee with the elephant, then the elephant would conform immediately after the melee.
Since the LI was destroyed, there is no conformation. |
