Hopefully an easy issue to resolve. In a game last night in Reading a medium knight (Norman) charged a cataphract (Nikephorian). The knight won the combat by one so we considered if the cataphracts armour saved it from a cohesion loss.
The knight had the furious charge ability but the rule on page 57 says it only applies against foot and has no effect against mounted. The rule also says that armour abilities do not apply during the first round of melee if the opponent has the furious charge ability. So the question is does the furious charge ability prevent the cataphract benefiting from its heavier armour?Â
We were unsure because although the knights furious charge ability has no effect against the cataphracts as they are mounted it could be argued that the knight still has this ability and therefore it prevents the cataphract from benefiting from its superior armour. |

Easy to answer :
1/ you did well about the cataphract armour bonus against the winning medium knight
2/ furious charge do not apply against mounted (p58 right col, 3rd para)
3/armour bonus do not apply if enemy has furious charge bonus on 1st turn and against elephant
Last, furious charge is not an ability, it is a tactical effect of specific combat configurations (ex Cv or Kn against LMI). _________________ "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead"

Sorry to be pedantic but just to be clear. We played it that the cataphract did not get the benefit of heavier armour. Did we get that right? |

But its clear on p58 that armour does not apply during the first round against a unit that "has the furious charge ability".
This seems clear to me that the cataphract armour ability does not therefore apply.
The furious charge ability is not contingent on the opponent, it applies in the first round simply because a unit has it.

No furious charge against mounted. Ever. So armour applies. |

So, i explain for rookies.
The furious charge doesn't apply again mounted.
So , a impetuous knight charging mounted troop doesn't has furious charge.
So, catafract armor bonus applies.
But, as usual, there 's a exception: armor bonus never applies again elephant. _________________ "Quand on a pas de technique, faut y aller à la zob"
