Hi folks.
My friend and I have just started playing L'Art De La Guerre. So far seems very interesting set of rules and we enjoyed both games. But we did encounter a couple of rules situations that we couldn't resolve so hopefully you can help us out.
The first is very basic and is whether non phasing player units that have been charged may shoot. On page 46 under shooting limitations it says " a unit that has charged, evaded, disengaged, pursued or retreated" may not shoot. But it doesn't talk about units that have been charged. It goes onto say that "a unit engaged in melee or supporting a friend in melee cannot shoot. But is a unit that has just been charged engaged in melee or because shooting comes first before hand to hand combat is it not yet engaged in melee?
The second situation concerned an impetuous cavalry unit that charged a line of 3 infantry units hitting the middle unit. It routed the unit it was fighting. On page 62 it talks about the impetuous unit having to pursue 1 UD if it routs all of it's opponents. But of course in this situation it was still in corner to corner contact with 2 other enemy infantry units. So are we right in thinking it hadn't routed all of it's opponents? Page 55 talks about it having to conform in those circumstances. But of course in conforming with one unit would mean it would lose corner to corner contact with the other unit. Can someone clarify what should happen please?
Thanks for your help.

Hi Ian,
welcome to adg world, I hope you'll enjoy you games. To answer you questions:
Engagement in melee starts at the moment contact is made so the archers can't shoot. Some troops do get a missile support factor which is a bit like shooting in the melee. Also, the melee takes precedence over shooting, so a shooter in say an overlap position must give its support to the melee. It can't instead choose to shoot at another target.
Edit
Opponents here are the units engaged in melee (see page 50). So  had the cavalry been engaged in front and rear edges (see Multiple Opponents, page59) it wouldn't be able to pursue the routed frontal opponents because it was still engaged to its flank.

Thanks for the prompt reply. Those interpretations do seem reasonable.

Best way to learn is by playing more experienced players.Â
Britcon is just down the road in Manchester this August. Eight games in a friendly fun filled weekend. I guarantee by the Sunday afternoon you'll ready to take on the FrenchÂ
