A
XY
A is opposite enemy units, XY but at a 45ish degree angle to them. It is in the ZOC of X only, but Y is less than 1UD movement ahead if A were able to move straight forward, whilst X is not straight ahead of it at all. I'll try to post a photo of this later.
The question is whether X can do a spontaneous charge against Y, even though its ZOC'd by X. The rule on P22 is "
Citation: | When a unit has an enemy situated at least partially directly in front of it at a distance of one UD or less, the unit, or the group that contains the unit, can charge this enemy without being given any orders. |
Does the use of the word 'this' indicate normal rules on charging most threatening unit don't apply? |

I think the FAQ addresses this. Since a spontaneous charge is still a charge.
“Charges must comply with all the Zone of Control constraints and exceptions (pages 33 to
35).†|

So unit A must charge X, and cannot do it as a free move? This was my understanding, but thre was disagreement at the club. |

According to your description :
1/A is in X ZOC so is limited to the FAQ p4 possibilities.
2/spontaneous charge is to be made straight forward, up to 1 UD (p27 left, last bullet)
3/All charges moves must be in accordance with ZOC rules (addenda)
So A can only charge X and has to pay 1 PIP for, except if impetuous (uncontrolled charge) _________________ "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead"

Agreed with Commodore. The ZoC rules will prevent the spontaneous charge straight ahead, forcing the unit to charge the nearer unit (X). That requires you to pay 1CP unless the unit is Impetuous and you let it make an uncontrolled charge by paying nothing. |
