I am fairly new to the game and wanted to check that my understanding was correct.

I would like to field a spearmen based list with the terrain advantages of before 638 AD.

Can I do this with a 636 or 637 AD list ?
As according to the note I must then replace all fanatic warriors with spearmen.

I don't thinks so, I read it as impetuous swordsmen must have Desert from 622 to 637 AD, but once you get to 638 and the Spearmen then you cannot have Desert and can only have Plain.

The note is a misprint. It should read 638. Nothing in the lists suggests you can make them HSp before 638 - also, it's unnecessary as the list is perfectly clear without it.

This should have been covered by the FAQ/Amendments.

I expect it will be cleared up in version 4.
