Morning All,

1) There is no obligation to upgrade any Spartan hoplite to elite, and the Brasidas option allows 2 (ordinary) Hoplites to be replaced with 2 Elite Medium Spearmen. That allows 2 elite Medium Spearmen replacing 2 ordinary Hoplites and the option to still upgrade 8 of the remaining hoplites.

2) the 2 elite Medium Spearmen replace 2 upgraded elite Hoplites leaving the option of a further 6 upgades.

When there's a limit put on the overall number of elites you can have of a particular group of units this is explained in the notes at the end of the list. See for example the Sassanid Asavaran.

So I'd say you can have up to 10 elite spear (8 HSp and 2 MSp) in that Spartan army.

FWIW your view is the same as mine, it was my (list checker) friend who took the opposite view.
