For my historical accurate painting:
Were English crusaders
under the banner of Richard Lionheart
dressed in same manner as the Templar order, meaning
A) Typical white with red cross for knights?
B) Black or brown with red cross for sergeants?
C) Accordingly same for shield
D) Were some dressed red with white cross, with red shield/yellow 3 lions e.g. his guards, standard bearers?
Awaiting with interest your advice. |

Having a Crusader army myself and Richard I as one of my General options. I use Richard with his loin Banner and English knights and foot I paint them with normal 12th century heraldry then add a red cross to a random number of shields and surcoats. The pilgrims (levy) all get red crosses. This my opinion no non religious order knight is going to swap his coat of arms for a plain white shield with a red cross because he can not be identified and his bravery will go unrecognized. |
