|
I have come to the conclusion that I have been reading too much into the rules.
Page 36, first paragraph, first sentence, says "A charge is a move in which a unit contacts an enemy, which is not already in melee, with its front edge...."
I have interpreted this that a charge cannnot be declared on an enemy already in melee.
However page 37 under illegal charge it says that a unit may charge the flank or rear of an enemy already in melee. And of course impetuous troops are required to charge an enemy already in contact to provide support. I'd always looked on the last one as an exception to a general rule.
And of course, this is not a big deal, it is usually easier to move to contact that it is to obey the charge constraints, but there is one way where a charge is easier. As a charger you get the extra 1 UD of movement to conform you would not get as a mover.
So, is it possible for a unit to charge an enemy already in melee? |

Yes. As you say by contacting an edge not already in contact with enemy. If a legal flank or rear charge the charger conforms to that edge, otherwise conforms as a supporting unit. |
