Page 87 says that partially replaced or upgraded troops cannot be cumulated to Elite.
Where the troops are a choice, in the case of the Picts it is medium swordsmen impetuous or medium spearmen.
I read that as a maximum of 4 in total of both types can be upgraded to elite, my friendly opponent suggests that it can be 4 of each for a total of 8.
So how many is it? |

The “max 4 in total†means across both categories. So 4 Swords, or 4 Spears or 2 of each, etc. but not 4 Swords and 4 Spears.
