|
The option for the Kingdom of Benin suggests that the actual research for this list is cursory. I think it is one of the poorest lists I've seen. The introduction consists of two sentences.
“The kingdom of Benin covered the southwestern part of Nigeria centered on its fortified capital Edo. The reign of Oba Ewuare between 1440 and 1473 was Benin’s golden age.â€
There are geographically no mountains in this region which is a river delta yet this is an option for the army and of course for any attacker to choose. It is arguable that this should be a region of Forest only certainly the city of Edo had recounted as having no roads protecting it from invasion, agriculture has a precarious hold even in modern Nigeria on this forested swampy region. Plains with their fields and plantations are much harder to establish with the Tsetse fly killing off any beast of burden, food production revolved more around gardens, fishing, foraging and hunting in that order.
The option for this army is simply replace all nobles 1100-1500. By 1100 the Kingdom of Benin actually had significant iron weapon production.
Why is Oba Ewuare not a strategist option. Reputtedly having 201 victories, instigating deep military reforms and significantly expanding the Kingdom, his reign is seen as kick starting the warrior king period. Why mention him if that was not the intention? No significant military change occurs in the list during Oba Ewuare’s reign nothing is reflected of his more sophisticated structure creating standing regiments of troops, for aggressively attacking his neighbour All these reforms held true until 1897 when the kingdom fell
We play figure wargames for one core reason to use beautiful metal figures. The main source for modellers will be the classic stolen Benin bronze plaques of Benin warriors are depicted as wearing composite armour including metal bells to reinforce it and ornate high brimmed metal helmets, with at least three sword types including a 2 handed weapon for chopping through armour. The plaques are dated from the 13th to 17th century sitting right in these lists. Im pleased to see African lists but has this list actually been proof read? |
