The Han Chinese list 116 includes guard foot Crossbowmen pavise elite.
I'm having trouble figuring out what this represents. A seemingly anachronisist standalone shield? a shield bearer with a large shield? superior armor short of the armored bonus?
Any pointers would be most welcome.
thanks!

Well, to answer my own question...what I could find on the web is pretty consistent that the Han did not use tower shields or pavises.
While Heavy Cavalry Crossbowmen dismount as Crossbowmen armored, I haven't seen any Crossbow armored in the lists (not that I looked very hard).
So it seems that the Han pavise represents some degree of protection from armor, without the advantage of aggressive hand-to-hand results.
I guess I would model it as a front rank of armored crossbowmen and a second of unarmored, as a reminder of partial advantage provided by the pavise ability.

Note that this is explicitly the case for Imperial Roman archers.

While somewhat elegant I’m not particularly a fan of using pavises to represent armored archers or crossbows. I guess at +2 points armor is too expensive for the limited utility troops so pathetic in close combat would get out of it. However, treating their armor as pavises doesn’t really work when they run up against crossbowmen as it makes them more resistant to crossbow fire than any other troops in the game - weird - maybe this is not such a big deal for EIR who didn’t really face enemy crossbowmen, but it is in China where they were quite common.

FWIW, there were pre-Han tower shields and other long shields after the Han, but these tower shields were only about 3’ (.9 m) tall and not self standing. Not quite pavises.
