Timetable and Access:
As you will (hopefully) already be aware we have a later than usual start and finish on Saturday. This is due to the WAR organisers staggering the start times for different competitions in a bid to reduce congestion at the show entrance on Saturday morning - apparently there has been a huge takeup for 40k this time, so there are almost twice as many players this year as at previous Warfare's. Both ADLG tournaments will be on the second floor but we haven't been told exactly where yet. On the day there will be some WAR helpers who will point everyone in the right direction.
ADLG players can get into the venue from 8:45, 1 hour before the official start time of the event - ADLG players may be turned away if you arrive earlier than this, and with the weather forecast for showers this could be a less than pleasant experience, so please instead take time to enjoy an extra slice of black pudding with your Premier Inn breakfast and aim for 8;45 if you can.
Even with the staggered entry times, we've been told it is still possible that there may be some friction at the door, as the Ascot Venue security may insist on undertaking bag searches and scans. Please smile and be nice to them.
Game Timetable
Saturday 0945-1215, 1245-1515, 1545-1815
Sunday 0930-1200, 1300-1530
Games will be 2 hours 20 mins plus a 1-10 min(s) variable addition determined by the period umpire. Given the complexities of running a draw this big, and players undoubted wish to visit the Warfare trade show (which is on another floor) between games we will be ending each round by calling a hard-stop, and ending the games immediately at that point. We will also circuate the first round draw later this week and post it on social media so you can start your first game as soon as you and your opponent get there, which should give you additional time around the show on Saturday lunchtime assuming your game concludes in a normal timeframe.
And remember - the event is in ASCOT - not Reading this year!
If you're on this list and don't want to be, please pm me!
Tim

25mm update

With only days now to go, and with hopefully no more unforseen family gatherings, unexpected shift changes, unanticipated sheltering in place events and unfortunate double-jabbed positive tests to take place we're now potentially zero'ing in on a final final final list of confirmed players for the 25/8mm ADLG event at Warfare this weekend

• David Roberts Cambridge French Ordonnance
• Chris Jackson Cardiff Swiss

• Don McHugh Clevedon Low Countries
• Dave Allen CLWC Burgundian Ordonnance

I suspect that masks will not be compulsory, but may be worth bring one along (just in case). I would definitely bring a mask if you are travelling by public transport.

They are compulsary on most forms of public transport in the UK (although this is widely ignored).

The venue's Health & Safety document (which I think will determine the rules for the venue) can be downloaded here: https://wargamesreading.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Health-and-Safety-DIGITAL.pdf

First Round Draws

As promised, here are your first round draws (done using https://www.randomresult.com/) for the L'Art de la Guerre events at this weekend's Warfare competitions.

Many thanks to Adrian Steer, who has kindly volunteered to (potentially… assuming no-one else is forced to withdraw) have the bye in the first round of the 15mm event - if you see him please offer buy him a beer (or a coffee!). We do have a spare player lined up for Sunday, and hopefully one for the 2nd and 3rd games on Saturday as well, so with luck no-one will need to miss a game.

Game Timetable, Access etc:

ADLG players can get into the venue from 8:45, 1 hour before the official start time of the event - ADLG players may be turned away if you arrive earlier than this. Both ADLG tournaments will be on the second floor but we haven't been told exactly where yet. On the day there will be some WAR helpers who will point everyone in the right direction.

Game Times
Saturday 0945-1215, 1245-1515, 1545-1815
Sunday 0930-1200, 1300-1530

Games will be 2 hours 20 mins plus a 1-10 min(s) variable addition determined by the period umpire. Given the complexities of running a draw this big, and players undoubted wish to visit the Warfare trade show (which is on another floor) between games Kevin and I will be ending each round by calling a hard-stop, and ending the games immediately at that point.

If you arrive early on Saturday (or Sunday?), please feel free to find your opponent (or ask to be introduced to them) and start your first game before the official start time. Based on previous tournament experience over 80% of ADLG games are fought to a conclusion inside 2 hours 30 minutes, so getting an early start should mean you and your opponent end up with additional time to visit the show at lunchtime - assuming you both crack on with attacking each other robustly and your game concludes in a normal timeframe! If both players agree, you can of course fix your own end-time for this first game as well.

We have been told that the Bring and Buy will be open to accept items from players as they arrive, ie before the offical "show" opening hours of 10am.

According to the WAR website, there will be three café's on site (Lavazza & Mrs B’s Kitchen on the concourse (ground) level and the Horsewalk Bar on the 4th floor). With the late start time this year our breaks between games (especially on Saturday) are all quite tight, so you may wish to bring your own sandwiches along - the WAR attendee instructions don't appear to prohibit this as far as we can see.

Warfare's Info page, with directions, parking and other useful information, is online at: https://www.wargamesreading.co.uk/warfare2021/

COVID Advice
There appears to be no specific COVID advice or requirement on the WAR website, and very little info on the Ascot Racecourse website however it is possible that there will be temperature checks on entry, one way systems and almost certainly hand sanitizer stations, so please comply with any instructions you are given at the event.

Current UK Government advice is however to "wear face coverings in crowded and enclosed areas where you come into contact with people you do not usually meet" and that "You may wish to take a rapid lateral flow test if it is expected that there will be a period of high risk that day. This includes spending time in crowded and enclosed spaces".

Both of these situations will probably occur when you are at Warfare, especially around the trade show, so whilst there is no requirement to mask up when playing or moving around the venue please feel free to do so should you wish. It also goes without saying to please respect the choices of any players that choose to do so. Most of the free NHS LFT's are now "up your nose only" tests, eliminating any need for a gag-reflex-inducing throat swab shenanigans, so it's now not really a big deal to take an LFT before coming either. Please do what you can to help everyone feel safe.

The thoughts and best wishes of all of the players at this event go out to Mark Dudman, who was taken seriously ill during the event, and remains in hospital as we speak.
