Units start position with front of medium swordsmen in rough, but unit not entirely in rough.


The right hand knight charges with a wheel so its front corner contacts the side edge of medium swordsmen without entering rough.


This is not a flank charge as the knight didn't start past the front edge of target. So we played it as a frontal charge. This means the knight should conform to the front of the medium swordsmen. But the front is entirely in rough, so the knight does not have to conform into it.

Is it correct
1. The charge is legal
2. Its a frontal charge
3. Knight does not have to conform into rough so both units stay in place and fight combat in the open. On their turn the medium swordsmen will conform to the knight.

The diagram on Page 53 (middle diagram) states that the attacker does not have to enter the debilitating terrain, so the melee is fought with both sides counting as being in the open and not conforming, but that the MI are then subsequently forced to leave the terrain and conform to the knights in the open in their turn.
I'd suggest that based on the fact that the charge was never going to be a flank attack (as the attacker was not behind the targets flank at the start of the charge) the melee will be counted as frontal - but that's just using 'logic' to come up with an answer/guess!

The rule on conforming clearly favors the attacker (in this case the knights), as it drags the MI out of its protective terrain.

Further reading of the rules suggests the following
1. The primary question is whether this is a legal charge.
2. P41 states contact must be on the front edge of the target unless the charger starts on rear or flank. This make the charge illegal unless entering the rough.
3. P51 diagram appears to contradict the above point by showing a unit contact the side edge of enemy. But this is actually an exception to P41 for the purposes of providing support only.

So..... A frontal charge must contact front edge of enemy, but a move to support can contact any edge.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

it's not a legal charge.As you wrote down, You can't arguing it's a frontal charge and contacting flank.
