I believe it does, but would like to confirm that if a combat bonus, such as that for cavalry fighting MI in the first round of melee, counts against MI it also counts fighting LMI?

I would say yes.

P74 has the troop types.

LMI is lighter medium foot, more the shooty type

MI is the slightly heavier medium foot, either spearmen or swordsmen

Our umpire this weekend said that only Bow and Javelin were LMI. and so +'s for mounted against LMI did not count against Medium Spearmen or swordsmen

The cavalry does get the extra +1 in the first turn against MI and LMI, if the cavalry is not impact.

so, first turn bow/crossbow LMi against non impact cavalry:
+1 for bow, and +2 for mounted (basic +1 and +1 for the first turn)

first turn Medium swordsmen vs non impact cavalry:
MI: +1/ cavalry +2

Medium spear vs cavalry:
Mi +2 (1+1 for impact receiving the charge) / cav +2
