Consider the following
XXX
YYY
Z
X are units - say spearmen facing down
Y are units the other side consisting of Medium swordsmen impetuous facing up and the Xs are in melee with the Ys
Unit Z belongs to the Y player. It is a unit of medium swordsmen impetuous. Say it is facing sideways
Page 45 says that "when an impetuous unit...is within charging range of an enemy (ignoring intervening friends)" that any move other than a charge or a movement to give support costs 3 CP
Z will not burst through friends in melee and it cannot reach to provide support. Nor is there any other enemy in range. It is in charging range of an enemy when ignoring friends.
So how many CP will it pay to move? |

p44, "Prohibited Charges", first bullet is your friend here.
XXX are not charge targets due to being in melee. _________________ www.madaxeman.com |

Thanks Tim,
Sorry for being unclear. I know that Z is not obligated to charge one of the units already in melee.
Sounds like Page 45 is intended to only apply to units which can charge or move to provide support. |

"Charge range" is both within distance and able to make contact (and being impetuous they will burst through most friends, hence the admonition to ignore intervening friends).
If Z is facing to the left, they should be able reach support, no? Do they have an obligation to (since moving to support is not a charge)? |

It looks like they go to support their friend in melee.
It looks like the sequence is as follows:
*Measure to see if any enemy are in charge range, not counting any intervening friends.
*If so, move to charge or contact to provide support against the most threatening enemy if it is possible to contact them (noting the exceptions on p 46).
*(Presumably you do this with the next most threatening enemy, and so forth and so on, until you have tested this for all enemies not behind the impetuous unit.)
*If making such contact is not possible then, you do not move.
However the rules might be ambiguous about what to do if all enemy in charge reach are already in melee. While the text of the might be read to say they are not subject to uncontrolled advances, the examples on p 46 read as if you still make an uncontrolled charge in this case. |

Your rear unit can charge to melee support as it can wheel 90° then charge straight forward to corner contact.
It is as per examples diagram p46 cavalry E but starting with a wheel instead of a slide. _________________ Player 747 don't call me Jumbo |
