P 59 says “If two units are separated by more than 1 UD of terrain that gives cover (in a wood for example) then shooting is not possible.

Does this mean that two units which are more than 1 UD apart but where there is less than one UD of that distance of cover providing terrain may shoot at each other? Or is just being > 1 UD apart when one of them is in terrain prevent shooting at each other?

1. For example, consider 2 units of archers that are 4 UD apart, but one of them is 0.5 UD inside a woods. Can they shoot at each other?

2. Does the answer change if one of them is right on the edge of the woods (though still inside) but they are still 4 UD apart?

Thanks.

They are not separated by more than 1 UD of terrain that gives cover so they can see each other.

Are you imagining any cover blocks all LOS if units are 4 UD apart? No that is not the case.

I do think any unit within 1UD can be seen and LOS lines to it are not blocked by terrain. This is consistent with how hill crest lines and gully edges are handled.

As to whether cover otherwise blocks LOS - it is very difficult to get 3 terrain pieces arranged to matter, so it's largely down to both units at the near edge of a feature.
If you allow 1UD of cumulative cover, then you can "line" the irregular edge of a wood and still shoot out, which is a reasonable thing, but might require some tedious measurements on occasion.

NB you measure line of sight between the unit corners, not the closest part of the edges. Therefore units with front edges less than 1ud apart still cannot shoot if the corners are further apart then 1ud.

Very counter initiative, and unreasonable but a literal reading of the written rules, and ruled as being the correct interpretation.

Not only counter intuitive Mike, but also wrong.

The rule:
Citation:
P59 Terrain cover and fortifications, 2nd sentence:

If the two units are separated by more than one UD of terrain that gives cover (in a wood for example) shooting is not possible

Just a (minimum) separation of the units, nothing about the LoS passing through more than one UD.

Very happy to be wrong on this one.

NB that was my memory from an extensive discussion, not sure whether it was here or on facebook.
