I know slings are treated like bows (LI Bw) under the rules, but would they be better classed if treated as crossbows and handguns? I thought slings were described as being pretty effective versus armored opponents, for example weren’t they noted for being useful versus Cataphracts? |

Making them the same as crossbow / handgun would give all of their opponents protection 1. In the eras where LF slingers are common that would disadvantage them against relatively common troop types such as MCv and bowmen, and would make them specialist anti-cataphract shooters. Not entirely sure the juice is worth the squeeze there.. _________________ www.madaxeman.com |

The rate of fire/shooting is also a factor with slings - with comparisons being made to bows.
Whereas xbows & handguns are noticeably slower.
Slings were also as effective against lighter armoured or unarmoured targets & specifically verses other skirmish type infantry, whilst xbiw & HG were specifically anti-armour weapons.
Personally I think the balance of them being comparable to bows is right. Especially in the context of the American & Biblical lists. |

The latest slingshot has an article about medieval archery and discusses (rough scanned summary) that the imagery some have of high volume massed showers of arrow fire are contradicted by descriptions of close range flat trajectory non volley fire. Apparently there is some academic disagreements.
Which reminds us that a single description of what happened may not be the best model. |
