Salutations, gentlefolk !
OK, I'm sitting here with pile of unpainted lead, 15mm, horsemen in mail, both round and kite shields, infantry armored and unarmored, most looking like Europeans from the end of the 'Dark Age' thru the Early Medieval. And lotsa time on hands. Probably enough for 200 points of any army of that period.
What would you folk say would be the most competitive list, from that continent and that period. Your opinions earnestly sought. _________________ As Governor Romney said about the Winter Olympics...

Normans in Sicily #180 both Frederick and Peter options are good. I prefer the Frederick w/ mixed shooters. This is a top flight army.
8-10 knights. 6 LC, 4 Mixed SHooters, 1-2 HI spear some LI.
Feudal French #175
Wall of elite Knights some LI and some XB.
Feudal Spanish #148 is sort of in-between the two above. Solid. but French and Frederick II are more optimized.
Carolingian #149 is good, but a bit more of a subtle rapier. The above have a much harder punch.
#183 Feudal German you can add parts to the Frederick II #180 list and get a more slogging foot army. Problem is too many choices. But you can build a solid Corps of very good infantry then support it with Knights. |

I quite like the Normans; For the Dark ages (e.g. no knights) you can have a Viking ally which gives you some flexibility rather than just relying on HC. Then in the Feudal period you get a wall of knights if that is a bit boring and you only want a knight option then the Feudal German list is very nice. |

If I had to pick one, it would probably be Normans in Sicily OR Normans in Italy with a North African Arab ally.
In reality, you could just paint up 9 x knights, 9 x heavy spear, 2 x bow, 2 x crossbow, and some light foot. That would let you play either Norman, Anglo Norman, Feudal French, Communal Italian, Normans in Sicily, or Early Crusaders.
