Can LI attack the flank of a (heavy) unit in melee support (if everyone is in the open)?
1111
AAAA22
AAAA22
.____22
.____22
.____LLLL
Letters against numbers in open terrain. 1111 (medium foot) is in melee against AAAA’s (heavy infantry) front. 2222 (medium cavalry) is in melee support of 1111 on AAAA’s flank. Can LI LLLL charge 2222 in the flank?
(All units are or will be fully and properly conformed on the flanks of enemy units they are or will be in contact with.)
The rules (last bullet on p 42) “can only charge an enemy if, after confirmation, they would be … in a support position.â€
Can the LI charge since it will not be providing support but instead will be the “main unit†in combat against 2222, albeit on 2222’s flank until 2222 conforms in its phase? |

No.
In the situation you describe, the light infantry (LLLL) and medium cavalry (2222) would form their own separate combat. As such, the light infantry would not be 'supporting' a combat and the move is not allowed.
