I'm trying to understand "Units who cannot contact enemy do not make an uncontrolled charge" on page 45. It's clear enough that if you have a group, a unit might get "squeezed out" in an unanticipated way.
But what about a unit one on one with an enemy that can evade? Do you always make the charge, even if there would be no chance to catch them if they flee?
The Note on page 46 indicates other circumstances where you do not charge units which can evade. |

P45 describes the situation where an impetuous unit “may†become subject to making an uncontrolled charge. Making such a charge and actually contacting enemy are two separate things.
If the target of an uncontrolled charge can evade, the charge usually proceeds regardless. And this is the classic point of light troops teasing impetuous troops to charge off willy nilly â€into the blue†without catching anything.
The p46 note is simply saying that the exception rules need to be taken into account when an evader is the initial target of an uncontrolled charge. So, for example, light troops can’t tease impetuous troops to charge in a situation that would breach any of the exception rules. |
