P 64 says “If a unit attacks an enemy situated just at the edge of a terrain piece, the attacking unit is considered to partially enter the enemy’s terrain piece. The most penalizing terrain modifier then applied to that unit until the end of the combat.â€
How does this affect the following:
1. If the unit moves through open ground up to the edge of (say difficult) terrain to attack an enemy unit just on the edge, is the mover’s movement allowance reduced to difficult or can it use its full open terrain movement allowance?
2. Do you have to uncontrollably charge an enemy on the edge of terrain? P 46 says you need not charge an enemy “If as a result of its charge, the unit would find itself in terrain that penalizes it in combat.†I assume not since in combat you are considered to have partially entered the enemy’s terrain… but I’m not sure if this is the correct reading of how these two rules interact.
3. What if a unit moves through the Open up to the edge of a Difficult terrain piece but stops right on the edge (as can often happen when evading, impetuous chasing evaders, pursuit or even routed a previous defender on the edge) and an enemy then moves through the difficult terrain to contact them? Is this combat considered to happen in the difficult or does this only happen if the unit at the edge of terrain but in difficult is itself static?
Thanks. |

1. As the unit does not cross or move through the terrain there is not move penalty.
2. While strictly speaking the unit does not end in the terrain, I trust the intent is that the charge is not provoked.
3. I interpret attack to apply only to the active player. Thus the penalty would occur during one combat phase in a turn but not the other. |
