My love of a good spreadsheet and a pretty data table has become far more widely known than I ever imagined. Recently, it led me into attempting something I don't normally do. It was true test.

The above is awaiting testing so I've not released a public version (yet). However, if you are interested (in a better mousetrap?), and you'd like to try it for yourself, get in touch.

So this will need to be compatible with submitting results to the system which is designed to accept the current tournament scoring and reporting.

How does yours interact with that?

As it says in the step by step pdf:
Citation:
After an event, it's straightforward to download a copy of the final sheet as an OpenDocument (.ods) file and upload it for
testing. In my hands this file format has passed the online tests every time.

This works because there's a hidden tab which is in exactly the right position (leftmost) and format (sorted by descending points) so it's read by the online testing tool. It's hidden so people don't mess about with it.

Simples!

The first live test of the spreadsheet took place at the weekend.

Richard Aynsley used it to run the 2025 Munster Open. A few post event tweaks required but it worked well for a 14 player, 5 round event even if the 5th round draw was a bit tricky.

There will be a further test this coming weekend. I'll be using it at the pre-Vapnartak 1 day event in York. It's an 18 player, 3 round event.

After this I'll decide on whether, and how best, to publish the spreadsheet.

Not wishing to 'p' on anybody's party here, but what's wrong with the current scoring and player allocation systems?

The one that Javier used with some 60+ players over 6 rounds out in Alicante a week or so ago seemed to work ok?
Or is that something the Spaniards (or Javier) have devised themselves?

Just asking
Mark

Hi Mark

I ran previous Munster Open's using the s/s from this website. It worked OK ish for me but I used to have issues with the macros depending on the version of Excel I was on.

I used Martin's Google Sheets this weekend (no need for Excel, so a potential cost saving straight away) and I found it excellent.

It provided proposed draws (the s/s from here doesn't), highlighted issues with draws and also gave me "Live Standings" for the players with no distractions - ie player and points automatically sorted.

So nothing wrong with the exisiting s/s but I personally found this one an improvement.

It was also good because I had "tech support" instantly available - don't think Martin ever logs off.

What Javi uses for Alicante, or Joa for Lisbon I don't know.

Cheers

Richard

Good to know and understand Richard - I used to Umpire a lot in the UK (using a different rules set) so know the challenges that you highlight.
Helpful to understand
Thanks
Mark

Thanks for the kind words. I do "log off" but only for meals and the odd pint.

The problems I encountered with the old sheet are briefly explained in the above blog post and the differences are covered in more detail (than you'll ever want) in the pdf on "Design Choices".

Happy reading.

Anything will work if you're experienced, careful, and technically skilled enough not to screw up. My approach is to make things as idiot-proof as possible.
